Quality Data Analysis

Our Quality Data Analysis training package is aimed at two types of users. The first is the full-time member of staff who has a steady day job and maintains the ISO 9000 certification as a small part of that. For him or her it offers an easy way of meeting the ISO 9001: 2000 requirements on data analysis that is not time consuming to set up or operate. It might just get some useful results too.

The other is the more full time Quality Manager in a company which does not have a centralised IT system generating quality control information. Neither type of user is assumed to be more than an Intermediate Excel user.

In either case it trains you to produce one or a series of workbooks that you can either use exclusively yourself to do the data entry and the reporting, or place on your company's server so that others can do the data entry and Managers or Team Leaders can do the analysis using the Pivot Tables and Charts you have set up. From what you learn and the examples, you can set up a number of these workbooks, recording data from around your company, looking at areas where things go wrong.

Respondents to our ISO Survey stress that continuous improvement was what they wanted out of ISO 9001, not endless reviewing basic processes that pretty much work anyway.

Places where monitoring occurs (or should occur) vary depending on the industry, but typically rejects from production lines, field repairs of products, warranty, complaints, credit notes and queries on information supplied, can all be monitored to advantage.

If root cause analysis is about asking 'why?' three times, then data analysis using this kind of workbook gets you through the first 'why?' with minimal effort.

It soon became clear that a particular product had become a problem in the field, with large numbers of warranty repairs and Service visits. Tracking that back to a 19" rack housing some control electronics was easy, and looking at the repair records showed a power supply was the problem. Analyzing 'build' records showed that the serial number structure of a bought-in power supply had changed and it turned out that a sub-sub- contractor had changed supplier of the power supply without telling anyone. These things don't usually show in the company's accounts; neither the problem or the lack of problem, which may be why they are allowed to occur!

Most companies' IT business systems do not include suitable quality monitoring functions, and the use of private databases is frowned upon by many corporate IT functions.

Microsoft Excel has powerful database functions, but requires a considerably more than Advanced level of knowledge to achieve a reliable, easy to use, difficult to break solution.

These factors can scare people off an otherwise very powerful tool.
